What Are Dermal Fillers?
Simply put, dermal fillers used within the UK are injections that usually contain a natural substance called hyaluronic acid to help plump the appearance of lips, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
Dermal fillers help to reduce the appearance of facial lines and restore the fullness and volume in the face.
Dermal fillers are manmade from a non animal substance that mimics the body's naturally depleted hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is found within the deep layers of the skin known as the dermis, its main function is to keep the skin sooth and healthy by helping it to retain water.
As we age, our skin starts to produce less hyaluronic acid which can lead skin to become thin and dry. Natural lines and wrinkles deepen and lips eventually loose their fullness, with lines often appearing around the mouth and nose.
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Cheeks often lose their plump volumes and can lead to a sunken and hollow appearance. Adding moisture with hyaluronic acid may provide short term results, however, hyaluronic acid based facial fillers- known as dermal fillers, truly get moisture integrated into deeper layers of the skin, working from within to attract water and restore volume.
Dermal fillers work by re-introducing the lost hyaluronic acid under the skin to where it is needed and actually fill in line and wrinkles for smooth results that can last up to 18 months before the body will naturally, and gradually break down the filler.
Fillers provide support and structure to the skin giving that plumped, youthful appearance. Semi-permanent, they provide safe, long lasting and tailored results.
Why Have Dermal Fillers Become So Popular?
As we age, we naturally loose subcutaneous fat- this is the fat that sits just under the skin and helps to protect your muscles and joints as well as connecting the dermis to muscle and bones with special connecting tissue. With the loss of this subcutaneous fat, the facial muscles are then working much closer to the skin surface. This is how areas such as crows feet and smile lines become more visible.
The facial skin also stretches over time, and other factors including sun exposure, lifestyle and heredity factors can contribute to the loss of facial volume.
Dermal fillers are temporary and usually last between 6-18months.
